EU GARAN label implementation guide
Separate likely GARAN eligibility from the trader display trigger, then prepare the official label, placement and commercial guarantee statement for 27 September 2026.
Last verified against official EU sources: 26 August 2026What is the GARAN label?
GARAN is the EU harmonised label for a qualifying commercial guarantee of durability expressed in years. It is separate from the harmonised notice explaining consumers' statutory legal guarantee rights. The current implementation date is 27 September 2026.
A producer guarantee can have the qualifying GARAN characteristics while the producer-to-trader information and seller display trigger still require separate factual review. Do not collapse them into one automatic yes/no result.
Core qualifying characteristics
Official EU business guidance describes GARAN for a voluntary commercial guarantee of durability offered by a producer that meets all of these characteristics:
- The guarantee is offered by the producer and concerns durability of the good.
- It is provided at no additional cost to the consumer.
- It covers the entire good, not only one component or function.
- Its duration is more than two years.
- The commitment supports repair or replacement at no cost if required functions and performance are not maintained through normal use during the stated period.
A long warranty alone is not enough. Role, cost, whole-good coverage and the exact promise all matter.
Producer and seller responsibilities
Producer preparation
Confirm the guarantee terms, make relevant durability-guarantee information available to the seller, prepare the official editable label fields, and provide the commercial guarantee statement in a durable form by delivery.
Seller implementation
Where the display trigger is established, clearly display the official GARAN label so consumers can identify the covered products. Check the sales channel, market language and producer information before implementation.
Official label: fixed and editable elements
Use the official Commission files. The harmonised design contains fixed elements that should not be rebuilt or changed. The implementation materials provide editable fields for:
- the durability-guarantee duration in years;
- the producer's brand or trademark; and
- the model identifier for the covered product.
Keep the official title, symbols, legal-guarantee reminder and QR code intact. Verify the current downloadable asset instructions before production use.
Online and physical presentation
Use the colour label. Official materials provide a nested e-commerce format that may expand after the first click or mouse roll-over. Test discoverability, expansion, mobile use and model matching.
The printed label cannot be smaller than 95 × 100 mm and may be colour or black and white. Make sure placement clearly connects the label to the covered good.
Commercial guarantee statement
The label does not replace the commercial guarantee statement. Official guidance describes a statement covering the legal-rights reminder, producer identity and address, claim steps, covered goods and guarantee conditions. It must be provided in a durable form the consumer can keep or revisit, no later than delivery.
GARAN implementation checklist
- Confirm the legal role: producer, seller/trader or both.
- Review the exact durability promise, duration, cost, whole-good coverage and repair/replacement responsibility.
- Document whether and when the producer supplied the relevant guarantee information to the seller.
- Download the current official GARAN asset instead of recreating the design.
- Edit only the permitted duration, producer brand/trademark and model identifier fields.
- Map online, nested-display and physical placements; validate colour and minimum print size.
- Prepare the commercial guarantee statement and durable-medium delivery evidence.
- Review market language, Member State implementation and the full consumer journey.
GARAN FAQ
Does every warranty longer than two years qualify?
No. Duration is only one condition. The role, no-additional-cost requirement, entire-good coverage and repair/replacement commitment must also be reviewed.
Can I use GARAN for a component-only guarantee?
The qualifying GARAN durability guarantee covers the entire good. A component-only guarantee should not be presented as the GARAN guarantee for the whole product.
Does the checker prove that a seller must display the label?
No. It separates likely guarantee eligibility from the producer-information and trader-display trigger. Contract, communication and channel facts can require manual review.
